Happy LEAP DAY!!! That's right, today is the 29th of February. It's an opportunity for people like Tillie Iverson of Chippewa Falls, WI to celebrate her actual birthday. Happy "24th" Tillie!
In Steamboat Springs it boils down to one extra day of skiing in an already epic year. One extra day to prepare our taxes before Uncle Sam starts knocking on our doors in April. Or maybe for you it's an extra day to reflect on the past 4 years since February 29th was here last.
But what exactly is this Leap Year thing all about? I did a little research (I have to credit Wikipedia on this one) and here goes...
A leap year (or intercalary year) is a year containing one or more extra days (or, in the case of lunisolar calendars, an extra month) in order to keep the calendar year synchronised with the astronomical or seasonal year. For example, in the Gregorian calender, February would have 29 days in a leap year instead of the usual 28. Because seasons and astronomical events do not repeat at an exact number of full days, a calendar which had the same number of days in each year would, over time, drift with respect to the event it was supposed to track. By occasionally inserting (or intercalating) an additional day or month into the year, the drift can be corrected. A year which is not a leap year is called a common year.
'Nuff said. I simply hope you are enjoying your extra day and taking advantage of it in any way possible. As I look around town this morning, I already see a lightness in the faces of our locals. For us, Leap Year means one extra day of living the Steamboat lifestyle!
