Scribbling some notes the other day, it became readily clear that the face of Steamboat is changing. But it’s not all condos and retail, mind you. Take a look for yourself and you’ll see some major infrastructure improvements as well. Public funds are hard at work building a new Soda Creek Elementary School. Remodels and additions are taking place at both Strawberry Park Elementary and Steamboat Springs Middle Schools. Steamboat’s new Community Center is complete and very soon our town will have expanded resources available at the new library.
Looking at the mountain area, there are some exciting new projects on the horizon there as well. Ski Time Square revitalization is slated to begin this summer. This will be the largest capital improvement to hit our base area in history, creating a much more pedestrian-friendly place for everyone. The Urban Redevelopment Authority is still examining ways to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety at the Mt. Werner Circle and Village Drive intersections. The base area promenade together with the completion of One Steamboat Place and the unveiling of Burgess Creek will provide the public a wonderful setting for summer enjoyment.
So as you look around at things to come, be mindful of the future shape of Steamboat Springs. It’s easy to reminisce about the way Steamboat used to be. I used to love my ’78 Honda Civic as well, but things wear out. Generally speaking, when a town spends money to improve itself, real estate values continue to climb. This is the time to buy for the future. There is more discussion and action taking place to improve the quality of life in this community than ever before. I think most people agree that these investments made in both tourist amenities and hometown infrastructure continually add to the value and quality of life here in Steamboat.
